Catherine and I have been collaborating now for several years traveling to Iceland and Ireland for residencies where we were both inspired by the raw and natural energies of the landscape. Our experiences at these residencies sparked many conversations throughout our collaboration. Conversations between us, between our work and about the actively changing landscapes around us. We observed and discussed the natural processes that shape a region, the unfinished nature of landscapes, and our unique practices of making, unmaking, remaking. Above all, we focused on process over immutable form. This exhibition reflects the essence of these ongoing conversations.

The Art of Materials Panel Discussion

I will be participating on a panel discussion for The Art of Materials exhibition on Sunday, June 9th from 1:00 - 2:30pm. It will be held at the Petaluma Arts Center, 230 Lakeville Street in Petaluma. A selection of participating artists in the current exhibition will discuss what drives their art-making process and how their choice of material defines their work. Please come by to hear from the artists and see the exhibit if you haven’t yet had a chance.

The Art of Materials

This exhibition brings together artists who are working with paper, fabric, industrial felt, metal, steel, cement, clay, plastic, cork and wood. Some of the artists combine disparate materials that embody imaginative content or reuse materials that create symbolic forms. Others opt for a single material that gives full voice to their artistic expression. The Art of Materials exhibition has two major questions which are the central topic of consideration: why an artist chooses the material used in their artwork and how the selection of that material reflects what the artist wants to say.

Many thanks to the curators Vicky Kumpfer and Lisa Lightman for putting together this exhibition. I am honored to be a part of it.

Materiality Re_Mined; Deep Within the Screen of a Cell Phone

features an installation by two artists, Brooke Holve and Catherine Richardson.

The exhibit opens at the Seager Gray Gallery in MIll Valley on July 1 and will be on view till the end of July. The opening reception is on July 10th with a conversation by the artists at 3:00 followed by a reception from 4 - 6.

I have been collaborating with Catherine Richardson on this topic of extraction for over two years. The installation will look at the global impact of our much coveted cell phones on the environment. Digging deep into the components of a cell phone, the artists reveal connections between its “smartness,” the mining industries and humans’ relationship with the earth.

This installation is part of a larger movement of artists, “Art On The Edge Of The Abyss” a multimedia, multi-venue, cross-border art intervention that will investigate extractive industry in all of its forms (from mining and drilling to the reckless exploitation of water, soil, trees, marine life, and other natural resources). The project will expose and interrogate extraction’s negative social and environmental consequences, from the damage done to people, especially indigenous and disenfranchised communities, to ravaged landscapes and poisoned water to climate change and its many troubling implications
