For this artist book, Brooke explored the gesture, crumpling as content and process. She had encountered a production error—a missing signature in the catalog The Way Things Are, about SF Bay Area conceptual artist, David Ireland. As she was surprised and frustrated by the missing pages, the error stopped her and triggered her to think about what this might mean to a conceptual artist. She decided to start a conversation with him using the catalog as the material for an artist book in addition to vintage pages from her collection. .Reflecting again on her gut response to the mistake, she came up with the gesture of crumpling as a way to engage with the material. It evolved into a generative process of working —asking questions and watching what happens when crumpling interacts with material, language and psyche. The process became the textural context and content from which she considered the origins of language and her own crumpled sensibilities evoked while making.
